How to Configure MCP in Cursor

AI-first code editor. Uses project-level or global `.cursor/mcp.json`.

Official Cursor Docs

macOS

~/.cursor/mcp.json

Windows

%USERPROFILE%\.cursor\mcp.json

Linux

~/.cursor/mcp.json

Setup and verification

Configuration: .cursor/mcp.json / mcpServers / JSON

Documentation reviewed: 2026-11-02. This is not a runtime test or security audit.

  1. Choose project scope (.cursor/mcp.json) or global scope (~/.cursor/mcp.json). The paths shown here are global; the generator shows the project filename.
  2. Merge the generated mcpServers entries into the selected JSON file. Install the runtime required by the server.
  3. Open Cursor settings and check MCP server status. Review tool approvals before using the server.

Review every command and requested permission. Merge only the relevant server entries; do not overwrite unrelated settings. Keep credentials out of version control.
