How to Configure MCP in Zed

High-performance multiplayer code editor written in Rust.

Official Zed Docs

macOS

~/.config/zed/settings.json

Windows

Command palette: zed: open settings file

Linux

~/.config/zed/settings.json

Setup and verification

Configuration: settings.json / context_servers / JSON

Documentation reviewed: 2026-11-02. This is not a runtime test or security audit.

  1. Use the command palette: zed: open settings file, or open Settings > AI > MCP Servers.
  2. Merge generated entries under context_servers. Preserve the rest of settings.json.
  3. Check for the Server is active status; authenticate remote OAuth servers if prompted.

The old experimental.model_context_protocol.servers structure is not used. This adapter supports local STDIO and remote Streamable HTTP.

Review every command and requested permission. Merge only the relevant server entries; do not overwrite unrelated settings. Keep credentials out of version control.
