ChatGPT desktop MCP settings can share the Codex host configuration. Web custom MCP setup is a separate flow.

Setup and verification

Configuration: config.toml (shared Codex host) / mcp_servers / Guide only

Documentation reviewed: 2026-11-02. This is not a runtime test or security audit.

  1. In a supported ChatGPT desktop app, open Settings > MCP servers > Add server.
  2. Choose STDIO or Streamable HTTP and enter the reviewed command or URL. Save, then select Restart.
  3. Authenticate if required; use /mcp to inspect connected servers. Shared-host TOML configuration is documented in the Codex guide.

Desktop availability and workspace policy apply. No separate chatgpt_config.json file is used by this documented flow.

ChatGPT on the web uses Plugins > Add custom MCP server with public HTTPS or a Secure MCP Tunnel. See https://developers.openai.com/apps-sdk/deploy/connect-chatgpt/ . No ChatGPT-specific templates are published here.

Review every command and requested permission. Merge only the relevant server entries; do not overwrite unrelated settings. Keep credentials out of version control.
