How to Configure MCP in Codex

Codex MCP uses TOML configuration shared by the CLI, IDE extension and supported desktop host.

Official Codex Docs

macOS

~/.codex/config.toml

Windows

%USERPROFILE%\.codex\config.toml

Linux

~/.codex/config.toml

Setup and verification

Configuration: config.toml / mcp_servers / TOML

Documentation reviewed: 2026-11-02. This is not a runtime test or security audit.

  1. Open ~/.codex/config.toml, or .codex/config.toml in a trusted project. Respect a custom Codex home when configured.
  2. Merge the generated [mcp_servers."name"] TOML tables. Do not paste JSON or duplicate an existing table.
  3. Restart the client, inspect MCP server status and authenticate remote OAuth servers when required.

The reviewed adapter supports STDIO and Streamable HTTP, not legacy SSE. HTTP headers use http_headers. Do not replace the rest of config.toml.

Review every command and requested permission. Merge only the relevant server entries; do not overwrite unrelated settings. Keep credentials out of version control.
