How to Configure MCP in VS Code

Native Visual Studio Code MCP configuration, distinct from the Cline and Continue extensions.

Linux

Setup and verification

Configuration: .vscode/mcp.json / servers / JSON

Documentation reviewed: 2026-11-02. This is not a runtime test or security audit.

  1. Open .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace for the native VS Code configuration format.
  2. Merge the generated servers entries. STDIO uses type: stdio; remote servers use http or sse.
  3. Use the MCP configuration editor to start the server, review trust and select its tools in an agent session.

This is the native VS Code compatibility format. Newer portable Copilot .mcp.json uses mcpServers instead; do not mix these formats. Continue and Cline have separate guides.

Review every command and requested permission. Merge only the relevant server entries; do not overwrite unrelated settings. Keep credentials out of version control.
